1. Gernerally these was a belidf that the new nations should be sovereign and independent states, large enough to be economically viable and integrated by a particular set of laws.
【分析】復(fù)合句。there be 句型為句子主干,a belief 是主語中心語,后面的 that 引導(dǎo)同位語從句,補充說明 belief 的內(nèi)容。該從句中的 large enough...作后置定語修飾 states。
【譯文】一種普遍存在的信念是:新國家應(yīng)該是獨立自主的,應(yīng)該足夠大,大到足以在經(jīng)濟上能獨立,并且要由一套共同的法律統(tǒng)一起來。
2. They would try to decide what intelligence in huamns is really for, not merely how much of it there is.
【分析】復(fù)合句。本句的主干是 They would try to decide...。decide 后跟兩個并列的賓語從句,分別由 what和 how much 引導(dǎo)。
【譯文】它們會試圖判定人類智力的用途,而不僅僅是人類有多少智慧。

【拓展】 apparently 在此處的意思是“顯然地”,另外一個意思是“表面上地(未必真實地)”。語法拓展:疑問代詞或副詞后的不定式疑問代詞 who, what, which 等和疑問副詞 when, where,how 等后面跟不定式,構(gòu)成不定式短語。這種結(jié)構(gòu)在句中可作主語、賓語、表語、賓語補足語等句子成分。此結(jié)構(gòu)可以改寫成由該疑問詞引導(dǎo)的從句,從句所作的句子成分不變。如:Perhaps the most difficult challenge is how to survive without friends. 可以改寫成 Perhaps the most difficult challenge is how we survive without friends(也許最艱難的挑戰(zhàn),就是生活中孤獨無友。)
4. However, a comparison with data for weeks when there was no experimentation showed that output always went upon Monday.
【分析】復(fù)合句。句子主干為 a comparison...showed that...,that 引導(dǎo)的賓語從句。 with data 作comparison 的后置定語,其中包含 when 引導(dǎo)的定語從句修飾 weeks。
【譯文】但是,和沒有進行試驗的幾周的數(shù)據(jù)進行對比發(fā)現(xiàn),周一的產(chǎn)出總是會增加。
