If you're middle-aged and your memory's not what it used to be, check the bathroom scale, researchers warned, suggesting overweight people tend to score more poorly on tests of memory than their thinner peers do.
The findings suggest that a heavier weight in middle age may mean a higher risk of dementia later in life.
Reporting in the journal Neurology, the researchers speculated that higher rates of cardiovascular disease or diabetes might help explain the link. But it's also possible that substances produced by fat cells, such as the hormone leptin, have direct effects on the brain.
The study compared mental abilities to body mass index (BMI), a
measurement of weight in relation to height used to define overweight and obesity. A BMI of 25 or more indicates overweight, and 30 or more is obese.
The study also investigated the relationships between BMI and cognitive function in 2,223 healthy men and women between the ages of 32 and 62 in France through the use of four cognitive tests.
The study found a higher BMI was associated with lower cognitive test scores. Results from a test involving word memory recall show people with a BMI of 20 remembered an average of nine out of 16 words, while people with a BMI of 30 remembered an average of seven out of 16 words.

In my elementary years, there was a little girl in the class who worked very hard but somehow could never do satisfactorily in her lessons.
The teacher asked me to help her, and it was obvious that she expected a lot from me.
But as a young boy, restless, thoughtless, I always tried to evade her so as to get more time to enjoy myself.
One day before the final exam, she came up to me and said, could you please explain this to me? I want very much to do better this time.
I started explaining, and finished in a hurry.
Pretending not to notice her still confused eyes, I ran off quickly.
Nat surprisingly, she again did very badly in the exam.
And two months later, at the beginning of the new semester, word came of her death of blood cancer.

As I grew up, changed and improved by this incident and many other similar ones, I began to perceive the changes taking place around me and to find that society, in a way, was in its formative years like myself.
New buildings, new commodities and new fashions appear every day.
New ideas, new information, new technologies.
People can talk with each other from any corner of the earth in a matter of seconds.
Society is becoming more competitive.
Words like individuality and creativity are getting more emphasis and more people are rewarded for their hard work and efforts.
Such is the era in which this generation ,grows and matures.
Such is the era in which this generation will take over the nation from our fathers and learn to run it.
Yet in the meantime, many problems still exist.
We learn that crimes take place in broad daylight with crowds of people looking on and not assisting.
We hear that there are still about 1 million children in this country who can’t even afford to go to elementary schools while enormous sums of money are being squandered away on dinner parties and luxury cars.
We buy shoddy medicines, or merely worthless junk in the name of medicines, that aggravate, rather than alleviate our diseases since money, many people believe, is the most important thing in the world that must be made, even at the expense of morality and responsibility.
Such an era, therefore, determines that we are a generation with a keener sense of competition and efficiency and a greater readiness to think critically and act creatively.

Thus ,it is necessary for us to use internet in a reasonable way and restrain from overindulgence .after all. internet is invented to enrich our life ,and to improve the effiency of our work rather than shackle us with a chain . 二、活動主題
科技創新，英為有你
三、活動目的
為進一步加強我校大學生的科技創新意識、創新精神和實踐動手能力，充分展示校園科技創新活動成果，全面推動全校學風建設，我校決定舉辦XX年大學生科技節系列活動，在此次科技節系列活動中，外國語學院決定在近期舉辦一場科技英語演講比賽。
四、活動背景
在21世紀的今天，英語在國際交流中的作用不言而喻，隨著我國科技的不斷發展，人才要求的.日益提高，科技英語變得十分重要;學好科技英語，掌握流暢的口語是順應社會發展所必備的素質。因此，外國語學院團委準備在近期舉行一場培養科學精神，提高實踐創新能力為主題的科技演講比賽。
五、活動范圍及對象
活動對象是我校全體在校大學生，其中本學院大一大二每兩個班至少派出一位參賽選手，其他同學亦可以以個人名義報名參加。
六、比賽具體流程
〈一〉初賽
初賽以學院為單位進行，由各學院老師和同學選出至少一名選手參加外國語學院的復賽。
初賽在8日前結束。
二復賽
復賽以外國語學院為單位，評委由外院老師和學生會學習部成員共同組成。 經過初賽的選拔，我們會選出11名優秀選手參加全校決賽。
復賽時間暫定x月9號。
〈三〉決賽
復賽在5號樓53舉行，評委由外院老師及外教組成。
復賽日期暫定11月12號。
評分標準：
1、內容要求：主題鮮明，內容清楚、結構清晰、中心突出，合理展開、闡釋充分、證據相關、邏輯性強，內容生動、不枯燥，能吸引聽眾注意力。 (3分)
2、語言要求：使用標準英國英語或美國英語。語言準確(發音清晰，音調、音高合適，用詞準確、相關)，語言流利(注意連讀、詞重音、句重音、語調和節奏等)。 (3分)
3、技巧要求：自信，有感情與氣勢;注意手勢、眼神與身體語言;幽默感(不能是啞劇式的幽默或調侃);適當使用修辭手段(比喻、類比等)。 (3分)
4、時間控制：定題演講在2 分3秒時有工作人員提示，超過3 分15秒，或不足2 分45秒，扣1-5 分。 (1分)
5、道具使用：定題演講中允許使用實物、圖片等輔助道具，但僅限使用一次道具，使用道具過多將被酌情扣分。
評獎與獎勵：
決賽產生一等獎1名，二等獎2名，三等獎3名，優秀獎5名
八、活動前期準備：
1、1月28號通知各學院，請他們于11月8月號前選出至少一名參加復賽的同學。
2、提前申請好活動場地，申請展板攤位。
3、制作宣傳海報兩份，設計宣傳單并復印若干份，提前宣傳整個活動
4、做好活動所需材料的準備：把干事分為兩組，宣傳小組和設計小組，設計小組主要負責海報、傳單、邀請函、獎狀的設計和決賽當天現場布置方案、物資準備，而宣傳小組主要負責初賽到決賽的宣傳，并且負責邀請評委嘉賓。
5、聯系好各部門的同學過來協助、幫忙
6、在新聞部調用同學準備負責拍攝，制作現場ppt等技術工作

Two years ago, when we first came to this program and began our three years of high school education. It was your enthusiasm that influenced us, giving us the heart to keep moving forward; it was your encouragement that motivated us, encouraging us to persevere. It was your high spirits that encouraged us, and pointed us in the right way. It was your harmony that united us, urging us to stand our ground and charge fearlessly forward.
Three years, 36 months(thirty-six), 1095 days(one thousand and ninety-five), 26280 hours(twenty-six thousand two hundred and eighty), 1576800 minutes(1 million five hundred and seventy-six thousand eight hundred), 94608000 seconds(ninety-four million six hundred and eight thousand). With 51 university acceptance letters coming from all directions, people were impressed by your accomplishments. We, the Grade 11’s will shortly turn into grade 12’s already feel the pressure that is soon to be placed upon us, and we thank you for your example, which will give us the perseverance to succeed. In the up-coming year, we will follow your footsteps, and will never give up creating what will be our very own miracle. At the same time, we would like to inform our dear future successors, we hope that you will not be afraid of the future hardships; we also hope that you put your best efforts into your work; to become the pride and future of Sino – Canadian Program here in Jilin City No.1 High School and ChangchunExperimental High School.

And i am very glad to tell you that we have two distinguished guests from england to join us tonight to celebrate this special christmas eve with us together. this is because christmas eve has the same meaning of safe and peace with ping an in chinese. just as the chinese saying goes, “safe and peace is fortune and luck”. so i’d like to extend my best wishes of fortune and luck to everyone here and those you love as well as those who are now still working in their posts.
Christmas is a time to give thanks, so let’s give our hearty thanks to our parents, our teachers, those around us as well as our great motherland with our sincerity, loyalty, intelligence and diligence.
