　　Global warming is melting glaciers fast enough to justify making them the theme of this year's World

　　Environment Day. June Fifth is when all of us should give serious thought to melting ice.

　　The glaciers are melting in the Himalayan Mountains.

　　An environment group took these photos in China in April.

　　For China, they bring home the message of a recent United Nations warning.

　　A UN commission on climate change predicts the Himalayan Mountains will lose eighty percent of their glaciers in thirty years to come.

　　China is aware of the threat.

　　You might say melting ice will add to the amount of water. That's true in the short run. But in the longer perspective of a few decades, river water levels will decline. China's Southwest, Nepal and India's North will suffer water shortages at great economic costs.

　　China's glaciers feed the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers, which irrigate crops along their banks. Melting glaciers will ultimately threaten food production.

　　China's environmental authority hopes to go to the root of the problem by calling for reducing emissions of pollutants.

　　Most researchers around the world agree that green house gases are to blame for the disappearance of ice. They say part of the solution is to sharply cut use of fossil fuels.
