The miser and his gold
Once upon a time there was a miser. He hid his gold under a tree. Every week he used to dig it up.
One night a robber stole all the gold. When the miser came again, he found nothing but an empty hole.
He was surprised, and then burst into tears.All the neighbors gathered around him.
He told them how he used to come and visit his gold.
"Did you ever take any of it out?" asked one of them. "No," he said, "I only came to look at it." "Then come again and look at the hole," said the neighbor, "it will be the same as looking at the gold."
守財(cái)奴
從前，有個(gè)守財(cái)奴將他的金塊埋到一棵樹(shù)下，每周他都去把他挖出來(lái)看看。
一天晚上，一個(gè)小偷挖走了所有的金塊。 守財(cái)奴再來(lái)查看時(shí)，發(fā)現(xiàn)除了一個(gè)空洞什么都沒(méi)有了。
守財(cái)奴便捶胸痛哭。哭聲引來(lái)了鄰居，他告訴他們這里原來(lái)有他的金塊。
問(wèn)明了原因后，一個(gè)鄰居問(wèn)：“你使用過(guò)這些金塊嗎?” “沒(méi)用過(guò)，” 他說(shuō)，“我只是時(shí)常來(lái)看看。”“那么，以后再來(lái)看這個(gè)洞，”鄰居說(shuō)，“就像以前有金塊時(shí)一樣。”
寓意: 即使是再珍貴的東西，如果不善加使用，也不會(huì)帶來(lái)任何好處。
中英文勵(lì)志故事：狐貍和獅子
The fox and the lion
When the fox first saw the lion he was terribly frightened. He ran away, and hid himself in the woods.
The second time, however, he came near the lion. He stopped at a safe distance, and watched him pass by.
The third time they came near one another.
The fox went straight up to the lion, and stayed the whole day with him. He asked the lion how his family was, and when they would meet again.
They soon became good friends.
狐貍和獅子
狐貍第一次見(jiàn)到獅子時(shí)非常害怕，趕緊藏到森林里。
當(dāng)他第二次遇到獅子時(shí)，則站在附近看獅子經(jīng)過(guò)。
第三次遇到獅子時(shí)，他竟有膽量，走了上去，與獅子進(jìn)行十分親切的談話。
不久，他們變成了好朋友。
寓意: 不要害怕不了解的事物，接近它，就會(huì)覺(jué)得沒(méi)什么可怕的。

The old man and Death
An old man was gathering sticks in a forest.
At last he grew very tired and hopeless. He threw down all the sticks and cried out, "I cannot bear this life any longer. Ah, I wish Death would come and take me!"
As he spoke, Death appeared, and said to him, "What would you do, old man? I heard you call me."
"Please, sir," replied the old man, "would you help me lift this bundle of sticks up to my shoulder?"
老人與死神
有個(gè)老人在森林中砍了不少柴，十分吃力地挑著走了很遠(yuǎn)的路。
一路上他累極了，實(shí)在挑不動(dòng)了，便扔下柴擔(dān)，叫喊起來(lái)：“這種日子我受不了了，死神啊，帶我走吧。”
這時(shí)，死神來(lái)了，對(duì)他說(shuō)：“老頭，你想做什么，我聽(tīng)見(jiàn)你叫我?”
“先生，”老人說(shuō)，“您能幫忙將那擔(dān)子放在我的肩上嗎?”
寓意: 即使生活不幸，人們?nèi)孕钀?ài)惜生命。
