  Do You Know My Work?

  One night a hotel caught fire, and the people who were staying in it ran out in their nigh clothes,Two men stood outside and looked at the fire.

  “Before Icame out,” said one,“I ran into some of the rooms and found a lot of money. People don'tthink of money when they're afraid. When anyone leaves paper money in a fire, thefire burns it. So I took all the bills that I could find.No one willbe poorer because I took them.”

  “You don'tknow my work?”said the other.

  “What is yourwork?”

  “I’m apoliceman.”

  “Oh!”cried thefirst man. He thought quickly and said:“And do you know mywork?”

  “No”said thepoliceman.

  “I'm awriter, I'm always telling stories about things that never happened.”

  譯文:你知道我是干什么的嗎?

  一天晚上,一家旅館失火,住在這家旅館里的人穿著睡衣就跑了出來,有兩個(gè)人站在外面,看著大火。

  “在我出來之前,”其中一個(gè)說:“我跑進(jìn)一些房間,找到了一大筆錢。人在恐懼中是不會(huì)想到錢的。如果有人把紙幣留在火里,火就會(huì)把它燒成灰燼。所以我把我所能找到的鈔票都拿走了。沒有人會(huì)因?yàn)槲夷米咚鼈兌兊酶F。”

  “你不知道我是干什么的?”另一個(gè)人說。

  “你是干什么的?”

  “我是警察。”

  “噢!”第一個(gè)人喊了一聲。他靈機(jī)一動(dòng),說:“那你知道我是干什么的?”

  “不知道。”警察說。

  “我是個(gè)作家,我總是愛編一些從未發(fā)生過的故事。”

  The Boys And The Frogs(男孩與青蛙)One spring day some naughty boys were playing near a pond. They began to throw stones into the water. In the pond lived many frogs were much afraid of the boys, for the stones hurt some of the frogs. At last an old frog lifted his head out of the water and said, “Boys, please don’t throw stones at us.”

  The boys said, “We are only playing.” “I know that, but please stop throwing stones, my boys. What is play to you is death to us,” said the old frog.

  So the boys stopped throwing stones and went away.

  春天里的一天,一些頑皮的男孩在一個(gè)水塘邊玩耍。他們開始往水里扔石塊。許多生活在水塘里的青蛙非常害怕這些男孩,因?yàn)槭^曾弄傷了他們中的一些。最后一只老青蛙把他的腦袋探出水面,他說:“孩子們,請(qǐng)別向我們?nèi)邮^。”

  男孩說:“我們只是在玩耍。”“我知道,但請(qǐng)別扔石頭,孩子們。對(duì)你們而言的玩耍對(duì)我們可意味著死亡。”老青蛙說。

  因此男孩們不再扔石頭并且離開了。
